2. South-Limburg’s farmers heritage
Around 5 000 years B.C. the first farmers settled on the fertile soils of South
Limburg. They removed trees, ploughed the grounds, sowed and reaped their harvests.
They grazed their cattle, went hunting and fishing and processed the products.
During thousands of years they slowly improved their agricultural methods.
Until the nineteen twenties most tools were made by the local smith or carpenter,
like the plough shown here.

The
simple hedges made from material found around the farm were almost everywhere – until
barbed wire became cheap enough.
The hand-made stone drinking troughs are still to been seen in some places.
