1. The kitchen garden
In former days every castle, country-house or farmhouse
had its kitchen garden with fruit trees, vegetables,
herbs, and perhaps some medicinal plants. In this region
the kitchen garden often contained also some flowers
used for decorating the church and other holy places.

The design
of the garden reflected the religious and economical
state of the owner. So in this garden, originally
part of the nearby castle of Schaloen, the paths
still form a cross, and the yew tree in the centre
is cut in a spiral form symbol of eternity.
The
bower with a bench was a resting place for the
castle’s family.
The box trees growing in the low hedges were (and
are) used as ‘palms’ in the church
(especially at Palm Sunday)
