18. A classical old Dutch herb garden
This garden is designed after the model of herb
gardens as they were found near country
houses in the 18th century and since.
The inner circle contains
the kitchen herbs; the outer circle the medicinal herbs. The shrubs around
the garden are mostly medicinal too.
In addition to the herbs you find various colourful flowers, fragrant
herbs, palm-lily, roses and clipped yews. The circular flowerbed in the
centre
and the flower-dishes in baroque style give the garden its elegance.
They form a colourful counterbalance to the abundant green.
At
the backside of the garden there is a fountain
in a wall, referring to the natural springs at
the bottom of some hills in the region. The form
of the wall-fountain reflects the front side
of the water mill. In the front a picture of
a so-called ‘Bokkenrijder’ (=’buck
rider’). Bokkenrijders were gangs of highway
men who travelled and robbed only by night. According
to the popular belief they moved through the
air, seated on bucks. The Bokkenrijders harassed
South-Limburg in the 18th century. Many people
were falsely accused by the courts of being members
of the gang. Several hundreds of people have
been executed for this reason between 1743 and 1775
