13. A little bit of nature, geology, history and romance
At
the beginning of the footpath along the river Geul
you will see a part of a so-called doline.
Dolines
or ‘organ-pipes’ were caused by the erosive
power of rain water in the soft limestone. These pipes
became dangerous when they grew to such a diameter
that even men or animals could disappear in them or ‘blokckworkers’ (see
number 5) down under, were caught.

In spring the wooded hillsides are full of flowers,
because enough sunlight can fall through the bare branches
of the trees. The typical forest plants fulfil there
life cycle during the short spring time, in summer
they hide underground.
From the path on the waterside you can see an unique ‘fish-basket’ next
to the water mill. The ‘basket’ was closed, the lock-gate opened
and the fish was caught in the basket. The next morning the water was let out
and the fish could be gathered from the fish-basket.
Sometimes they gathered 40-50 kilo’s of trout or eel in one night, for
the residents of castle Schaloen.
